How to get out of a funk

Have you ever found yourself stuck in a funk? Meaning you just can’t seem to shake your bad mood. You can’t seem to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You can’t see the blessing in the situation no matter how you try to look at it. Those are examples of being stuck in a funk. Well………how do you get out of it? How do you fix those negative thoughts? Here’s a few things I think can help you when you find yourself in this position:

  1. Get to the root of the issue. What is causing you to feel the way you’re feeling? Once you get to the root you can begin to work through it and overcome it.
  2. Zoom in closer on the positives in your life. This is particularly helpful because it will allow you to go from thinking your house is too small, to being grateful you have a roof over your head.
  3. Do something you enjoy. I’ve found if I’m in a not-so-great mood, doing something I find enjoyable helps out a lot. Things I decide to do differ from time to time. One day I’ll go on a simple walk. One day I’ll listen to my favorite music or find my favorite TV show to watch. Doing something you enjoy allows you to put yourself in a happy space, and allow good energy to flow.
  4. Talk to someone you trust. We can’t always handle every single thing by ourselves. Confiding in someone you trust offers an extra layer of support. An extra layer of comfort, and it often makes us feel good to know we’re not alone.
  5. Allow yourself to feel how you feel but tell yourself there’s a time limit. We’re only fooling ourselves if we say we’re always happy, always in a good mood, always ready and willing, or bad days never affect us. Truth is getting into a funk happens to everyone. The trick is some people you just never know because they don’t allow themselves to sit in their negative feelings.

So with all that being said, understand that getting in a funk happens to everyone. No one is exempt from a bad day or bad mood. HOWEVER, you are in control of how deep you get into a funk or how long you stay there. Take some time and figure out which method is your favorite. And before you know it, you’ll find yourself conquering all your bad days like a pro! -Lori G. Clark
